HikerKit helps you prepare hiking gear and keep trip records. This policy covers HikerKit 2.0, including gear and trip memories, imported GPX tracks, map backgrounds, image sharing, and optional iCloud backup.
Information You Provide
Your primary gear and trip records are stored locally on your device. You choose which information to add, import, export, share, or include in optional iCloud backup.
- Gear items, including name, category, brand, weight, quantity, price, notes, and optional photos
- Trip plans and completed records, including names, planned and actual dates, notes, selected gear, carried quantities, packing progress, worn gear, and historical gear snapshots
- Optional trip cover photos and memory text
- Imported GPX files and route data, which may include precise coordinates, elevation, timestamps, segments, distance, ascent, and descent
- Preferences, including language, theme, weight unit, sharing settings, and backup settings
How Your Information Is Used
HikerKit uses this information to maintain your gear library and checklists, calculate recorded weights and statistics, display completed trips in Calendar and Timeline, review imported routes, generate sharing images, and perform backups or restores you choose. Completed trips keep the gear snapshot captured when you confirm completion.
Photos and Camera
When you add a gear photo or trip cover photo, HikerKit uses the system photo picker or camera and may request the permissions needed for the selected action. Saving charts, gear lists, or memory cards to Photos may require permission to write images. HikerKit does not browse your photo library in the background.
Selected photos become part of the records you keep. They can also be included in a complete JSON or iCloud backup and in images you choose to share.
GPX Tracks and Location Information
GPX files are selected by you or shared into HikerKit through the system sharing flow. Their route data is parsed on the device for trip review and statistics. HikerKit's GPX feature does not automatically record your movements or provide live navigation.
A GPX can reveal precise locations and recording times. Review the route, endpoints, dates, and any related photos or notes before exporting a file or publishing a memory card. Hiding a displayed date does not anonymize the route or photo.
Map Backgrounds and Network Services
Standard and satellite backgrounds use Apple's system map services. Contour backgrounds use Mapzen / USGS elevation data downloaded as terrain tiles from an Amazon Web Services-hosted endpoint. Map and terrain results may be cached locally so they can be reused.
Loading a background may send requests for the relevant map area or tile coordinates to the provider. These requests can reveal the route's geographic area and ordinary network information, such as your IP address. Contour requests fetch tile coordinates rather than upload your original GPX file, photos, or memory text; the route overlay and contour rendering are produced on your device.
Network transfer and service-side handling are subject to the relevant provider's policies. Map availability depends on the network, services, and available caches; HikerKit does not guarantee complete offline map coverage.
Optional iCloud Backup
When you choose an immediate backup or enable automatic backup, HikerKit saves complete backup files in your own iCloud Drive. They can contain gear, categories, trips, historical gear snapshots, gear and trip photos, memory text, GPX and route data, and related settings. Backups use your iCloud storage. Apple handles transfer and storage under its iCloud service policies. HikerKit does not request your Apple Account password, send backups to the developer, or use a separate third-party backup server.
Automatic backup is off by default. After you enable it, changed data can be backed up while you use the app when at least 24 hours have passed since the last automatic backup. Turning automatic backup off does not delete existing backup files. You can manage cloud backups in HikerKit or the Files app; availability depends on your Apple account, iCloud Drive access, network, and storage.
This is a backup-and-restore workflow rather than live multi-device database synchronization. Restoration provides a preview and requires confirmation, with a local protection copy retained before restoring. A locally created backup is not proof that iCloud has finished uploading it; check its status.
Data Export, Import, and Sharing
You control manual import, export, and image sharing. JSON supports complete records, including gear, categories, trips, photos, memories, tracks, and sharing settings. CSV is an equipment table and does not contain complete trips, photos, or GPX; it does not replace a full backup.
Pack profiles, gear lists, and memory cards contain the content and display options you select. Precise dates and memory text are hidden by default on memory cards, but hiding them in an image does not remove them from the underlying trip or complete backup. Review the actual image and any photos, routes, names, or notes before sharing.
Saving sharing settings does not send an image. When you choose to export or share, the destination app, service, or recipient may receive the selected content and handle it under its own policies. You choose the destination and are responsible for protecting exported copies.
Purchases
HikerKit offers an optional in-app purchase, HikerKit Pro, through Apple. Pro unlocks unlimited trips. Purchases are processed by Apple, and HikerKit does not collect or store your payment card information.
Data Collection and Tracking
HikerKit does not sell your personal data, use third-party advertising, perform cross-app tracking, or send analytics to the developer. Gear and trip records and iCloud backups are not sent to the developer. Optional iCloud, map requests, App Store purchases, and destinations you choose for sharing involve the external services described in this policy.
Storage, Retention, and Your Controls
You can view, edit, and manage gear and trip records through the app. Deleting an item from the gear library does not necessarily remove its snapshot from a completed trip; manage the corresponding trip record if you need to remove that historical content.
Records and local protection copies use device storage. Deleting the app or resetting its local data may delete local records. This does not automatically delete files already stored in iCloud Drive, manually exported backups, or images shared elsewhere. Manage those copies separately, and retain a suitable backup before deleting local data.
Children's Privacy
HikerKit is not intended to collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, please contact us.
